She came to the United States as a refugee in 1975 and continued her education, achieving her Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Brown University in Rhode Island in 1983 and subsequently earning her Master's degree in Electrical Engineering. Kim has three children, whose autism ranges from mild to severe on the spectrum.
